What hair color actually suits me?

Updated 2026-10-30 · 5 min read · prettygirls.si editorial

Quick answer

Five questions, one answer: your undertone and your contrast. That is all a colorist is reading when they look at you.

How this actually works

Color is two axes, not one:

  • Temperature — cool, warm or neutral. Decides which colors look right.
  • Contrast — how far your hair sits from your skin. Decides how far you can move.

Most bad dye jobs fail on the second axis, not the first. The color was the right temperature, just five shades too light for the face wearing it.

The four families

  • Ash / cool brown. Cool undertone, low-to-medium contrast. Grey-brown, mushroom, smoky.
  • Golden / honey. Warm undertone. Butterscotch, caramel, honey.
  • Red / copper. Warm or neutral, any contrast. The most high-maintenance family — red pigment leaves the hair fastest.
  • Deep / black-brown. High contrast, medium-to-deep skin or strong dark eyes. Blue-black only if cool.

Before you dye

Two things the quiz cannot see: your current dye history, and how porous your ends are. If you have box dye on your lengths, any lift will go patchy. Tell your colorist. If you are doing it at home, do a strand test — every time.

Then put the color on your own photo before you put it on your head.

Questions

Is the vein test reliable?

Roughly, and only in natural light. It fails on people with rosacea, visible capillaries, or a tan. Treat it as one vote, not the answer.

Can I go from black to blonde in one session?

Almost never safely. Expect two or three sessions with bond builders in between. Anyone promising one session on virgin black hair is going to fry it.
